Review: Who knew that Orange Restaurant would be so damn packed on a late Sunday morning? I never thought the Printer's Row location would be as popular a destination as the one on Clark Street but I guess their decision to cash in on the young urban professional crowd worked. A thirty minute wait and two hungry stomachs is never a good thing, so we decided to forego their orange flavored coffee and walk to the old Printer's Row standby, Gourmand.

Gourmand's omelettes aren't standout breakfast fare, but don't let that stop you from stepping in this great little coffee shop. The breakfast is affordable and quick and the plates are always full. Each breakfast order comes with a slice of toast, a handful of grapes and two melon slices.

I've had the Spanish Omelette several times at Gourmand and have always been pleased with the simple concoction of green peppers, tomatoes and onion. This time, however, there was a piece of eggshell in one bite. I suppose this is a good sign that Gourmand uses fresh eggs instead of a mix or egg substitute. I'm not too picky and occasionally my omelettes contain a crunch. This one-time occurrence couldn't begin to bother me.

Come to Gourmand for good food, attractive waitstaff with a perfected air of college-student hip apathy, good music and rotating art on the walls. I've been to Gourmand for breakfast many times and I'm sure to go back for many more.

Note (02/04/06): Again, disappointed with a breakfast dish from Gourmand. The omelette tasted as if it was made up of hard water and again, I bit into eggshells. Keep this up Gourmand, and I may not come back. It is sad that one of my favorite neighborhood spots keeps serving up such unfavorable results. I have been driven to reduce the rating on this dish.
